New News Feed Facebook Sign Up: Tips and Tricks for Users

A welcome screen is just another new name for the context card. In practice, it appears when people click on the ad in their news feed, right before they visualize the pre-filled signup form. Facebook introduced this function to let users get more information about what they were signing up for before submitting the form. This additional step has helped marketers and business owners increase the quality of their leads.

Every advertiser submitting their campaigns competes for a specific ad placement in front of their target audience. If two beauty brands are reaching millennial women in the news feed, for example, they compete in the auction together.

Whether or not someone has made an effort to influence the content of their own news feed is often linked with their sense that users have control over the content that appears there. Half (50%) of Facebook adopters who think users have a lot of control over their news feeds have themselves attempted to influence the content they see there. But that share falls to 40% among those who think users have only a little control over the content of their feeds, and to 24% among those who think they have no control.

Responses to this question again differ substantially across age groups, as relatively small shares of older users say they have actively taken steps to try and influence their news feed. Some 46% of users younger than 50 have attempted to do this, but that share falls to 28% among those 50 to 64 and to just 19% among those 65 and older.

You have two options of getting access to and using Facebook news feed. The described Graph API gives an opportunity to access a separate User Feed of status updates and get posts API and links published by the user or other person on the profile. You can read more about it here.

Over the next few months other updates were rolled out. Facebook continued making tweaks to try and combat fake news and video clickbait, the news feed saw some slight design changes, and they improved their clicks and impressions reporting. And then Facebook went to Congress.

In a blog post Facebook said the number of video posts per individual user grew 94% on average in the US and 75% globally. And exposure has increased even faster. People saw 3.6 times more video in the news feed in 2014 than they did in 2013. And they now generate 1 billion video views collectively every day, 63% of it on mobile devices. (YouTube viewers meanwhile watch 4 billion videos a day, according to its latest public numbers from 2012. Presumably the number is much higher today. )

The new design seeks to address the issue. There is a distinct feed for "all friends," another for different groups of friends, one just for photos, and one for pages that users follow. As a result, says Chris Struhar, the lead engineer on the new design, the new feeds give people a way to see everything that's going on.

Daniel Singer is 13 and, according to his public Facebook profile, he enjoys "designing beautiful user interfaces and sitting down at my desk and creating great iOS apps." Last year, the eighth-grader created YouTell, a site that lets people ask for anonymous feedback from friends. You can use Facebook to log in, or email. As someone who designs applications, Singer calls Facebook's graphical design "brilliant." Still, he thinks the average teenager wants to see new stuff. Twitter comes to mind, along with Instagram and Pheed, a photo-text-video-audio sharing app launched last fall.
