16 million children in the world have severe malnutrition, and many more have moderate malnutrition. This can cause many issues including stunted growth. Yet at the same time, obesity is also a global problem.
KC: I discuss crisis intervention, grief counseling, veterinary social work, animal-assisted therapy, and zooeyia, among other topics. I think that the major message that I am trying to make is that human social welfare issues are animal welfare issues because the two are absolutely intertwined and interdependent. We share this planet and cannot ignore one for the other. When we help companion animals thrive and survive, we are also helping their human family members. We cannot care for animals nor humans in isolation and must consider them as a part of the family unit, just as we would with a mother, brother, or any other family member.
KC: I'm writing a book on animal hoarding, a very serious public health issue that affects entire communities and seems to go largely unnoticed. It also crosses cultural boundaries which is an interesting psychological phenomenon. I want to know what causes people to start hoarding animals and how can we help them stop and recover from this illness. Animals seriously suffer and die in hoarding houses and people also seriously suffer in these same houses. There's also a high rate of recidivism in animal hoarding, which means that even if we remove the animals, the people will collect more animals. Unfortunately, there is little information on treating animal hoarders and I want to develop a concrete treatment plan.
